Innovator Award

The Chris Jones Innovator Award is a $1,000 scholarship established in Fall 2020 to honor the life and legacy of Chris Jones. Chris' passion for technology and sports led him to create StatVA, a company that transformed many Virginia and Florida sports communities. Chris innovated collegiate and prep sports programs by providing services that fully leveraged technology to efficiently collect real-time team and athlete statistics. Chris was a major leader at Mosby Memorial Baptist Church, helping the faith community innovate in the areas of sound engineering, video capture and general use of technology to carry out its mission. Chris provided volunteers with opportunities to serve their community while learning new skills. With both StatVA and Mosby Memorial, Chris impacted the lives of many youth and adults by using technology as the vehicle to empower others to learn and lead. This award aims to honor a young innovator who shares Chris Jones' passions with a strong desire to continuously improve their community.

Qualifications-Can I Apply?

Students must meet the following conditions to apply for the 2023 Chris Jones Innovator Award:

Class of 2023 graduating high school Senior
Virginia resident
Student must be enrolling as a full-time undergraduate student in Fall 2023

Who Is Chris?

Christopher Anton Jones Sr. was a much-loved husband, father, son, and brother who died as a result of Covid-19 complications. Chris was born in Richmond, Va. in December 1978. He was a proud alumnus of Norfolk State University. At NSU, he started a sports statistical business, StatVA, which provided statistics on high school athletes to enable them to gain college scholarships in various sports. Chris was passionate about using the business to mentor high school students. The business grew to have contracts with companies like Nike and Adidas, working national basketball tournaments and other sports events. Chris was a member of Mosby Memorial Baptist Church while he lived in Richmond and was active in the church’s technology ministry.

Electronically submitted Application Packet must include

Copy of high school transcript

One non-relative community reference letter

One school reference letter

Answer the essay question - "An innovator is defined as a person who introduces new methods, ideas, or products. Please detail how, if chosen to be recipient of the Chris Jones Innovator Award, you will utilize your education to positively impact your community and how do you think churches and faith communities can innovate how they carry out their mission. How have you been innovative in how you serve your community during these Covid Times?" Essay length between 500 and 1000 words
